Policies of the Denver Seminary Library: Emergencies

Introduction

The following page provides essential instructions and contacts when fire incident or weather related closures occur.

Complete List of Denver Seminary’s security policies and reports.

Fire Alarms

Any incident of a fire occurring on campus will involve Seminary security personnel, Facilities staff, and the local Fire Department. A fire in any building may result in the loss of life or injuries, damage to physical structures, release of chemicals or biological hazards. Therefore, any suspected fire, smell of smoke, or visible manifestation of a fire must be considered as a working fire and treated by responding personnel as
factual rather than as a possibility.

Reporting A Fire or Smoke Condition
In any situation where a fire is known to exist or if a fire is suspected, the following steps must be taken:

1. Activate the nearest Fire Alarm Pull Station as you exit the building.

2. DIAL 911 to report the fire

Provide the 911 call taker with the following information:

  • Your name, location, and the reason you suspect (or know) a fire exists
  • Whether or not you have notified the fire department
  • Whether or not you know of people trapped in the building
  • Whether or not you know of chemical, biological, or radioactive hazards in the building
  • Answer any questions asked of you

The following should be contacted to report a fire once you have called 911 and are at a safe distance:

  • Biagio Burriesci– Director of Security, at 303-357-5818; or, if unavailable,
  • Rob Bachman – Director of Facilities, 303-762-6970,

If after Seminary business hours or during the weekend – Call security at 303-961-1184

Weather

Purpose:
Denver Seminary has predetermined plans and communication protocols for weather conditions that could affect Seminary operations as well as personal travel safety situations.

Scope:
This policy applies to everyone associated with Denver Seminary: Faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Definitions:
Inclement weather: Stormy, severe, and other unsafe weather conditions.
Personal travel safety: Travel to and from the Seminary, which has the potential to cause injury or difficult travel conditions.

General Policy:
The Seminary generally follows the procedures outlined below during inclement weather.

General Procedures:

  • Early School Closing
If the Seminary should close early during a regular business day, a decision is usually made by 4:00 PM to cancel evening classes. Attempts will be made to inform Associated Faculty who will be directly impacts through email or text emergency messaging system prior to 4:00 PM. A message may be available on the Seminary phone system and on the Seminary website.

  • Storms Occurring Overnight
For storms occurring overnight, a Seminary closure decision is usually made by the snow committee prior to 5:45 AM. Closure information may be available in multiple places as appropriate: Seminary phone system, Seminary website, news stations and text messaging.

  • Students Who Miss Class
Students may not be penalized for missed classes when the Seminary closes due to dangerous weather conditions. If the Seminary remains open and a student decides not come to class because of concerns regarding their personal travel safety, they will need to work with their professor to make up missed time and/or class work.

What follows is a list of the communications mediums that Denver Seminary will utilize in the event of an emergency or a school closure.

DenSem Email and Website

1. A notice on MyDenSem: these notices will appear in bold red letters across every page of MyDenSem.

2. A notice on the Seminary’s website: these notices will appear at the top of the homepage.

3. Broadcast emails and text messages: notices will be emailed/and or texted to all staff and faculty to their Seminary accounts and to students via their DMail account through the Rave Emergency System

Rave Emergency System

The messaging service is through Rave Emergency System and all students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled to receive emails or texts in the case of emergencies or school closures or delays. To manage your subscription (add/change cell phone numbers or add additional emails), please follow this link. You will be asked to enter your email address — this is simply to confirm that you are a real person. If you have not received a password, just click on “forgot password” and you will receive an email with a new link that allows you to finish the subscription process.

NOTE: If you do not have a DENVERSEMINARY.EDU or MYDENSEM.EDU email address, please email us to get set up in the Rave System.

This service is completely free to the Seminary community, and subscribing does not cost you anything except any normal text messaging charges as spelled out in your individual mobile phone service plan.

Please Note that if you change your mobile phone number, it is your responsibility to change it in the text messaging system; Denver Seminary does not make those changes for you.

When appropriate, emergency notifications and weather-related closures may be posted to Denver Seminary’s Facebook page. Check Facebook as a last resort, however, as not all messages may be posted to Facebook.
